EHS adjusts traffic pattern, introduces crossing guards

Posted On: Wednesday, April 12, 2017

To ensure the safety of buses crossing traffic on Bemberg Road and Jason Witten Way, Elizabethton City Schools (ECS) staff have implemented a new traffic pattern and the use of crossing guards at Elizabethton High School (EHS).

The school began a transition on Feb. 6 to a one-way traffic flow through the high school parking lot, with the entrance at Bemberg Road and the exit at Jason Witten Way. Two crossing guards, Mr. Proffitt and Mr. Hooks, are stopping traffic at both intersections to allow buses to safely enter and exit the school at dismissal.

“We thank everyone for their cooperation with these changes and hope they notice the improvement in traffic flow and safety,” said John Hutchins, ECS Director of Transportation. “Already, the congestion has been significantly reduced, and buses are able to enter and exit in under six minutes.”

ECS thanks Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw, Elizabethton Street and Sanitation Manager Danny Hilbert and EHS School Resource Officer Scott Whitmire for collaborating to determine the safest solution to congestion at these intersections.
